Frequently Asked Questions

How will hiring you affect my partner’s role during the birth?

My role is to support you AND your partner.  I will always act in a way that is inclusive to both you and your partner while giving you the attention you need.   I may do this by suggesting things for your partner to say or do, or it might be taking a turn as the main support person while your partner grabs something to eat.  My goal is for your birth to be a positive experience for all of you.

Do you perform any physical examinations?

No.  I am not a licensed medical professional and it would be out of the scope of my practice to perform any physical exam.

What is your “birth philosophy”?

I believe that our bodies are made for birth.  I also know that, occasionally, medical intervention is needed for the safety of the person giving birth and/or the baby.  My goal is for you to have YOUR ideal birth, whatever that looks like.  I provide information and let you make the decision that is right for YOU and your family.  Then, I support that decision.

What if you aren’t available when I go into labor?

First, let me assure you that this almost never happens.  I intentionally do not accept clients due at the same time.  If I am not available when you need me, a backup doula will be contacted and will join you as soon as possible. I will then join you as soon as I am available.  In the INCREDIBLY UNLIKELY situation of no one being able to join you during labor and delivery, you will receive a FULL refund

**If your labor progresses so quickly that I cannot reasonably be expected to get to you before baby arrives, no refund will be given. However, I will offer additional postpartum services equal to the fees paid.**

How much are your services and what is included?

My birth doula packages start at $1,000  and include 1-2 prenatal visits, continuous in person labor support, and 1 postpartum visit.

Additional services are available for various fees.
A non-refundable retainer is due upon signing of contract to reserve a space on my calendar.
Payment plans are available.
Exclusive discounts for clients of SCM

What are your interactions with medical staff like?

First, rest assured that I am there to support you, and you are my top priority.  When interacting with medical staff, regardless of location, I am always respectful.  I have found that a kind and respectful tone can make every relationship flow more smoothly, and I take this knowledge and skill into every part of my practice.

What is your refund policy?

In the event that you change your mind after signing the client contract, a refund of fees paid excluding the non-refundable retainer and the cost of any completed visits (i.e. birth planning) will be given.  In the event that I cannot fulfill my duties and cannot provide a back-up/replacement doula, a full refund will be given.

When will you join me in labor?  Will you meet me at my home first or wait until I go to the hospital/birth center?

This is mostly up to you.  When you call me to say that labor has definitely started, I will talk to you through a contraction or two to evaluate how you are doing.  Based on this information, I may suggest joining you then or in a while.  Basically, if you need me, I will be there.  If you’re doing good, I may take a short rest or eat something before I join you.

What is your service area?

I serve all of the Orange County, CA area. Basically, if I can get to you within an hour of you calling me, I can be your doula!  If you aren’t sure, send me a message and I will be happy to tell you if I can serve you, and if not, I can refer you to a great doula in your area!
